Generally, the hair grows about half an inch per month. However, there are variety of things can affect the rate of hair growth. By knowing these factors, we can have the most control to help us maximise how fast hair grows.

  1. Age. Generally, the incidence of hair loss in both males and females corresponds to chronological age. The older you get, the greater your chances of losing hair. People usually experience slower growth as they age.
  2. Climate. It is said that our locks grows faster in warmer weather. On the other hand, the sun can damage the scalp and hair. So it is recommended to protect your locks against UVA and UVB rays with a hat or a sunscreen especially in the summer months. Cold can also affect growth. Cold air can make the hair dry, fragile, and more brittle.
  3. Diet. The rate of growth also depends on the health of the scalp and follicles. To ensure faster hair growth, your diet should include fresh fruits and vegetables. Good nutrition means the best possible condition for building strong, radiant locks.

Infectious Diseases of Scalp and Hair

There are two main types of hair and scalp diseases: infectious and non-infectious. Infectious diseases are those that they can go contagiously from one man to another. The most common examples of them are: impetigo, head-lice, ringworm, scabies, warts and some more.

Severity of these infections and their danger to surrounding people may differ greatly. Therefore, it is of primary importance to note the symptoms, define the cause and begin the proper treatment as soon as possible. For this purpose, let’s have a look at some common infectious diseases of the scalp and hair.

Impetigo. This is a highly infectious disease that is most common among children. The cause of it is bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus/pyogenes) that enters through cut or injured head-skin. Impetigo is characterized by large moist blisters that gradually dry and form a yellow crust.

Scabies. Scabies is an ectoparasite skin infection that is caused by a small animal mite that can burrow through the scalp and lay eggs there. It is characterized by itchy rash and reddish spots and burrows on the scalp.

Warts. Warts are little raised lumps, which are typically found on hands and feet, but can occur on the head-skin as well. The cause of this infection is a human papillomavirus (HPV), which is spread by direct contact with the infected person.

Ringworm. This one is also known as Tinea capitis. It is a highly infectious scalp disease that is characterized by pink patches that gradually develop into round areas with damaged hairs. The cause of this infection is the fungus that can be spread directly or indirectly through combs and brushes, clothes and towels.

Head-lice. This is very infectious disease caused by small wingless parasitic insects (head-lice) that spend their entire life on the scalp, lay eggs, reproduce and suck human blood. This infection is very common in children.

Folliculitis. Folliculitis is an infectious inflammation of hair follicles caused by bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) that enter the scalp through scratching or by direct contact with the infected person.

These are common infectious diseases and conditions of the scalp and hair. If you suspect that you may have one of these disorders, you must instantly seek medical advice from either a doctor

or a trichologist.

Can I Pluck The Hairs Right After Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is an efficient method that can permanently reduce hairs but understanding how it works, and knowing what the entire process entails is a must in order to have a good experience and see satisfactory results. Being aware of the do’s and don’ts of laser hair removal is also absolutely essential. While the method is constantly changing for the better, plucking the hair after a laser hair removal session remains a no-no and for good reason.

The reason why hair should not be plucked right after a session is because it will disturb the hair growth cycle. No matter how tempting it might be to pull the hairs out, they must be left intact. The fact that hairs are still there after the treatment doesn’t mean that it didn’t work; this is simply the case with any laser treatment regardless of results. Unlike other removal methods, the laser device does not extract hairs by the root, but damages them to the point where they are no longer viable. Hair that is dead will be pushed out by the skin and shed, while hair that did not get damaged enough will be targeted in the next session.

While leaving hairs untouched after a laser session can be an inconvenience to some, it is important not to remove them in any way. Removing hairs by extracting them will make laser hair removal treatments much less efficient. The main reason why hairs should not be plucked before a session is because if there is no hair in place it can’t be treated. Laser hair removal depends on the hair being in the root so that the hair can absorb the energy, and the heat from the laser device can destroy it. Pinstriping Brushes – 3 Tips on Care and Maintenance of Pinstriping Brushes

If you want to create the perfect pinstriping designs on any vehicle you need to make sure that the brushes you use have been well cared for. In this article we offer some tips on how to care for pinstriping brushes so that they won’t have to be replaced any time soon.

1. The glue used to hold the bristles of the pinstriping brushes to the handle are water soluble and if exposed to water too much then it will become softened. Because of this the hairs will eventually become loose and start to fall out so avoid cleaning them in water if you can.

To clean the brush it is far better if you use a mineral spirit instead. It is best to initially rinse the brushes in the minerals spirits you have been using for cleaning the pallet whilst you are pinstriping. Although the cup in which the spirits is may look unusable remember you are using this to get most of the paint out of the brush.

After you have rinsed in the used spirits now to get rid of even more of the paint wipe the brush with a paper towel. Then having poured some fresh mineral spirits into another cup or jar you will be able to wash the rest of the paint out from it. Remember don’t just to wash the hairs of the brushes in the spirits but also the furrel as well.

You will recognize that your brush is thoroughly clean because no more paint will appear on the fresh paper towel you have used. After you are happy that the pinstriping brushes have been thoroughly cleaned you squeeze a small amount of 3 in 1 oil on to it and then shape it with your fingers. Using the oil prevents any oil that remains not to become and hardened and which could ultimately ruin the brush.

2. Although you may find it difficult to handle the brushes initially you should never be tempted to trim them. Sometimes however there may be a need to remove a small amount of the brushes tip but b before you do so you need to look closely at your pinstriping brush first. If you then decide to trim off any of the hairs then do so very carefully.

When trimming it is crucial that you oil the brush first as this will help it form the natural shape and then lay the brush flat on a sheet of paper or some other white surface. Doing this you will then see just what needs to be trimmed and very carefully using a sharp razor blade trim only the smallest amounts of the brushes hair as you need to from the tip. If you take off too much hair this will make the tip of the brush blunt and it won’t be able to create those perfect pinstripes for you.

3. If you find that your brushes begin to develop kinks or waves in them then you should find this problem relatively easy to fix. To remove these kinks or waves you first need to rinse any pinstriping brushes thoroughly in the mineral spirits and then rinse them very carefully in water. However, you must make sure that the furrel into which the hairs are set does not get wet and then dab the brushes on a paper towel to help remove as much water as possible.

After removing as much of the excess water as you can now add a little dish soap to the hairs and then shape the brush using your fingers. If the problem isn’t too severe then lay the pinstriping brushes flat, but if it is then put it between the pages of a book which will help to press it flat. You need to leave the brushes like this for around a week then after this time rinse the soap out with mineral spirits and hopefully its original shape will have been restored.

• Hormonal imbalances – A high concentration of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in men’s hair follicles, or in women, both during pregnancy and after delivery, can cause hair fall.

• At times, high amounts of sebum in the scalp clog the pores of the scalp and prevent nutrients from reaching the hair follicle, resulting in hair loss.

• Inadequate nutrition or unhealthy diet

• Stress, worry, lack of sleep, and anxiety

• Long-standing diseases like typhoid, viral infections, anemia, surgery, etc., cause general debility which leads to hair fall.

• Some medicines, like birth-control pills, anti-depressants, etc., including those used for gout, during chemotherapy against cancer, etc., cause hair fall.

• Tying hair tightly pulls the hair from the follicles and cause traction alopecia.

• Dandruff or fungal infection of scalp

• Accumulation of dirt on scalp causes blocking of pores and weakens hair roots. This leads to hair fall.

How can hair loss be prevented?

Hair loss can usually be prevented by using basic Ayurvedic home remedies and treatments. Only aggravated cases call for the expertise of a doctor. Follow these simple steps and you will see the difference they make to the health of your hair.

• Ayurvedic treatments always target the root cause of any problem and try to cure it completely. To prevent hair loss, it is essential that you identify the root cause in your diet or lifestyle that is causing the pitta dosha. Once you know what’s causing the problem, try to give up or at least reduce the diet, habit, or activity responsible for increasing pitta.

• To clean the hair, it is advisable to use a natural shampoo or soap that is not laden with too many chemicals.

Here is What Kills Hair Follicles

If baldness is a concern of yours, then you probably know that not only are there several causes but also many contributing factors to each cause. One of the main causes is damage to the follicle itself. How can this happen? There are many reasons this can occur, and you need to know what kills hair follicles.

First of all, you may not know what a follicle even is. The follicles are sac-like tubes that contain the roots. Attached to each follicle is the sebaceous gland. This gland is what secretes the oily substance sebum which is what lubricates the skin and hair.

The root that the follicle is surrounding is what is responsible for creating hair growth by stimulating the production of keratin which brings about the actual growth. Simply put, if your follicle is damaged, your chances of growing new hair diminish greatly. Another main cause of follicle destruction is chemical exposure. Certain medications that you might use for the treatment of another ailment may contain a chemical that damages follicles. Unfortunately the benefits of chemotherapy for cancer patients far outweighs the disadvantages. The most noticeable disadvantage is baldness in chemotherapy patients. That is because the aggressive chemical treatments to the body kill the follicles.

One of the most common but yet not widely known causes of follicle damage is the hormone called DHT. DHT is present in both men and women and comes from the hormone testosterone. Post-menopausal women are at greater risk of having higher levels of the DHT. The loss of estrogen during menopause means that testosterone can take over and release more DHT. DHT kills the follicle by attaching to it and suffocating it until it falls out.

Now that you know what kills hair follicles, you can take some steps to prevent this from happening. Protect your head from heat, avoid stress, and most importantly avoid medications that contain chemicals that may cause damage if possible. There are also herbal extracts and some prescriptions available that may help with the regulation of the DHT hormone.

Itchy Scalp and Thinning Hair? Tips and Advice That May Help

The other day, I received similar emails from both a man and a woman who described having an itchy, tingling scalp with hair loss that seemed accelerated and was accompanied by thinning.  Both wanted to know what they could do about their scalp (which hopefully would also help the hair loss.)  In truth, there are several reasons that these two things occur side by side or simultaneously.  I will discuss these things in the following article.

The Most Common Cause For An Itching Scalp Accompanied By Shedding Or Thinning Hair: By far, the most common cause for this condition is an over reaction to your scalp to the androgens that are on it.  Now, this may be a sudden onset of symptoms because either your hormones are changing, the androgens are increasing, or your sensitivity to the androgens is increasing.  All three of these things generally occur with age.   And, these things tie into genetic or androgenic hair loss, meaning your standard, run of the mill, patterned baldness or thinning.  Sometimes this is patterned (typically with more loss happening at the temples, crown, or top) or it can be more diffuse (especially in women.)

The treatments depend on how aggressive you wan to be and how bad the thinning really is.  Some people will only seek relief for the itching.  Tea tree oil is good for this as are anti inflammatory shampoos.  If you want to address the thinning, you will need to address the sensitivity at the follicles. However with that said, you will want to try things gradually and you should be very careful about any treatment that can affect or change your hormones, as hormonal vulnerability might just be what caused this. I often recommend starting with things that are placed on your scalp rather than going internally and taking things into your body.

Itchy Scalp Accompanied By Telogen Effluvium (TE):  Sometimes, for whatever reason, your follicles will go through a shed or a sort of spring cleaning.  This can occur, again, because of changing hormones, changing medications, illness, stress, and many other things.  Often, you will get shedding that will sort of run its course, and hopefully, end after a few months.  In the meantime though, since so many follicles are being shed out at one time, you can get a tight, itchy, or painful scalp while this is happening.

Now, sometimes, the thinning is caused as a result of the shedding, but sometimes miniaturization takes place. What this means is that your hair is growing back thinner and finer as the result of being affected by the androgens that I discussed above.  If your regrowth looks fine though, you’re typically over the TE hump and can just focus on reducing the inflammation of your scalp.

Other Considerations: Dermatological Conditions Of The Scalp: Sometimes, your scalp itches or looks angry because it’s having some reaction due to injury, allergic reactions, yeast, infections, or products that are injuring it.  This is typically something that your dermatologist can pinpoint with a sun lamp.  Sometimes, you will have reactions on other parts of your body other than the scalp.  You might see sores or bumps on the scalp.  Ask yourself if you have changed products or regimens. Thinning with these conditions is somewhat rare, although I have heard of this happening.
